BSS PLUS Lifestyle Interactions

Balanced Salt, Ophthalmic solution for irrigation

Foods high in potassium

· Severity: Severe

· Notes for Consumers: Do not take Potassium Salts together with dietary salt substitutes or low salt milk products which contain potassium. Taking these can increase the level of potassium in the blood. If the potassium level is too high, you may experience muscle weakness or an abnormal heart rhythm. If you experience extreme muscle weakness, chest pain, pounding heartbeat, or an unusually fast or slow heart beat, contact your health care provider immediately. While taking Potassium-containing medicines, your prescriber may order a blood test to check the level of potassium in your blood. DO NOT take potassium-containing nutritional supplements with this medicine unless they are approved for you by your health care provider.

· Notes for Professionals: Foods, seasonings, or medicines containing high potassium or sodium content, such as dietary salt substitutes, 'low salt' milk products (which contain potassium), or tomato juice (which has high sodium content), could increase the risk of complications of hyperkalemia or sodium excess. Regularly monitor the serum potassium and/or sodium concentration in patients taking food or medications with high potassium and/or sodium content. Muscle weakness, chest pain, or an abnormal heart rhythm can indicate hyperkalemia. Abdominal pain, diarrhea, metabolic alkalosis, nausea, vomiting, and seizures can indicate sodium excess.

Caffeine-containing Foods/Beverages

· Severity: Major

· Notes for Consumers: Limit excessive Caffeine intake (examples: coffee, teas, colas, chocolate and some herbal supplements) while taking Sympathomimetics and avoid medicines containing additional Caffeine whenever possible. Examples of Sympathomimetics include stimulants or weight loss drugs like Amphetamine, Adderall, Dexedrine, Fastin, and Tenuate. Sympathomimetics also include some cough and cold products containing Pseudoephedrine (example Sudafed), Phenylephrine, or Phenylpropanolamine (PPA) and also herbal weight loss products containing ephedra or Ma huang. Taking a high amount of Caffeine with the listed drugs can increase the risk of nausea, nervousness, palpitations, problems with sleep, rapid heartbeat, or other side effects.

· Notes for Professionals: Sodium phosphates should be used with caution in patients using concomitant medications that lower the seizure threshold like psychostimulants.

Alcohol

· Severity: Moderate

· Notes for Consumers: Ethanol can decrease the actions of Magnesium Salts, by increasing its elimination from the body. To get the best results, limit your intake of alcoholic beverages while taking Magnesium Salts or supplements.

· Notes for Professionals: Excessive ethanol (e.g., alcoholism) may result in increased urinary excretion of magnesium. Avoid high intakes of ethanol while taking magnesium salts.

Food

· Severity: Moderate

· Notes for Consumers: Avoid taking Sodium Bicarbonate with foods or beverages which contain a high sodium content (such as tomato juice or processed foods). Sodium Bicarbonate contains a significant amount of sodium in the oral solution. Talk to your health care provider about any dietary restrictions which are important in improving your health conditions.

· Notes for Professionals: Food or medicines containing a high sodium content (e.g., tomato juice) could increase the risk of complications of sodium excess when given with sodium bicarbonate. Patients and clinicians should be aware of the amount of sodium intake in medications and foods.
